Weekender to Bright

Cool weather but we got away for the weekend to Bright in north-eastern Victoria.  Stopped at the Peppercorn in Yea for a coffee, over Lake Eildon (full) at Bonnie Doon  and onto Mansfield for lunch before taking that lovely road across the ridge to Whitfield – another coffee at the Whitty Cafe.  A nice run down the King Valley to Mytleford and Bright.

Checked out our block – still there – had an ale or two at the Bright Brewery, fish and chips for tea and bed at the Alpine Hotel.

Next morning was sunny, windless and cloudless – and 9C – as we walked around town.  We both had headaches (!), but managed bacon and eggs before the return trip via Moyhu and Greta South – where Ned Kelly lived – to Benalla (coffee).  Tracked down past Lake Nilahcootie – full – with views of the Strathbogie Ranges and Mt Samaria and onto Yea (chips).

Can’t beat the north-east of Victoria for scenery and motorcycling.  The Breva clicked over 33,000km and Jane’s Duke 34,5000.

After the rain..

The rain finally stopped so off for a run. The road surface feels great after so much rain. Ran into these vintage/veterans at Newstead. They trailered into Maldon, rode down to Castlemaine for lunch, Newstead for coffee, then back to Maldon.  Overtook them on the run to Maldon, breathing unburnt petrol, burning oil and kerosene.

I did 367km on the Breva before refueling with 16.9L, equalling 21km/L (61mpg) – pretty good for such a big bike and an improvement as the engine runs in.  33,000km on her now.

Guzzi Overland pass through Melbourne

Attended the Moto Guzzi club meeting last night at the Leinster Hotel, Collingwood, to welcome Kev and Karen to Melbourne on their ’round the world trip on their Guzzi.  They staying with some members while here.  We ran some raffles and an auction to raise travel funds.

Run to Yea

Flogged over to Yea for a coffee.  Didn’t have any traffic in front of us as we wound around that lovely road from Trawool to King Parrot Creek.  Then on to Glenburn, Flowerdale and Strath Creek for lunch.  The Glenburn-Flowerdale road still hasn’t been repaired back to its previous glory after suffering in the Black Saturday bushfires some years ago.  But Flowerdale-Strath Creek is still a beauty.

Then it was up the Murchison Gap to Broadford and home.

Hepco-Becker test

Put the Hepco-Becker panniers on Jane’s Ducati and went for a “shake-down” cruise through Maldon, Newstead, Creswick and Daylesford. Definately a good test on some of these goat tracks that are supposed to be main roads!

Now we’re ready for our next big trip.

Hot day fang

Spent an hour fanging around local back roads in 32C.   Sure could feel the engine heat through my Neds.  Temp dropped 2C through the forest near Spring Hill.  Took a pic of the Lauriston Reservoir:

Impulse Ride

Went for a run with a couple of the Guzzi club on an “impulse” ride (unplanned).  Caught up with Jan (V7) and Peter (Le Mans) at Sicilian Vespers in Romsey for brunch, then fanged over to Trentham via Fern Hill and the “Pig and Whistle”.  Stopped for a drink at the Cosmopolitan Hotel where the band played Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightening” for us.

Stopped for a drink at the Cosmopolitan Hotel where the band played Richard Thompson’s “1952 Vincent Black Lightening” for us:

Oh says Red Molly to James “That’s a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like”
Says James to Red Molly “My hat’s off to you
It’s a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952.
And I’ve seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme”
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride
Oh says James to Red Molly “Here’s a ring for your right hand
But I’ll tell you in earnest I’m a dangerous man.
For I’ve fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I’m 21 years, I might make 22
And I don’t mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I’ll give you my Vincent to ride”

“Come down, come down, Red Molly” called Sergeant McRae
“For they’ve taken young James Adie for armed robbery.
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside.
Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside”
When she came to the hospital, there wasn’t much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
He said “I’ll give you my Vincent to ride”

Says James “In my opinion, there’s nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won’t do,
Ah, they don’t have a soul like a Vincent 52”
Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said “I’ve got no further use for these.
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome,
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home”
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.

Drove up to the Memorial Cross at Mt Macedon on New Year’s Eve:

The following morning, tossing cat biscuits to “Michael” (“Nigel” and “Squeaker” out of view).

Boxing Day 2011

Spent the afternoon with Tas, wiring up the Breva 1100 for a Fiam Freeway Blaster horn.  Built a wiring loom with a relay to handle the extra current draw.  Tas loves using cable ties, so the whole loom – ours and the original – is now tight as a drum.  Instead of sounding like a scooter, the bike  now sounds like a Mack truck!  Can’t let those Eurobastards tell us how to run our bikes!
